Description:

ÒWhen the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.Ó (Acts 2: 1-4)

This feeling of the wind, flames and spirit is what I have tried to capture in this quilt for Pentecost. Yellow, orange, and red in energetic swirls of movement represent the wind and flames. The viewer is to get the feeling of movement and energy of the wind and the power of the flames, symbolic of the Holy Spirit as it was embodied in flames. The wind symbolizes the breath of God. In Hebrew, I understand, the breath of life, and wind and spirit are the same word.

Being felt, not seen, sometimes directional, sometimes absent, wind has a mysterious and unpredictable character. It also is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The flames and wind, and thus the Holy Spirit, I have tried to show extending outward, as spreading the gospel. The viewer is also drawn to a focal point of a descending dove, the preeminent symbol for the Holy Spirit.
