Lent
Sermon
Series
Teach Us to Pray...
This year we are going to focus on adding something to our lives
that will improve our walk with God: PRAYER.
I'm really excited about this. Why? Because as our church advances
into the future and continues to pursue the heart of God, prayer is
absolutely essential.
This is something that the Acts Church definitely knew. Acts 2:42
said that the first church ...
"Devoted themselves to ... prayer."
As
we seek to do the same, we'll spend the next 6 weeks talking about
prayer and how we can improve our communication with the Lord.
As
you'll see below, our sermon series will be called ...
"Teach us to Pray."
If we're
honest, we'd all like to take our prayer lives to the next level. In
other words, we all have room to grow in how we communicate with the
Lord.
My challenge is for us to take full advantage of these next 6 weeks.
Our sermons will focus on prayer; Our Wednesday evening Bible
study will focus on prayer; And we will have other
opportunities to practice and apply what we talk about on Sunday
mornings.
- Will you
be open
to the material?
- Will you
engage
the material?
- Will you
apply
the material when you go home?
- Will you
adopt
the
prayer of the disciples as your own?
"Lord, teach
us to pray" (Luke 11:1)
For the
first 3 weeks we will focus on different aspects of prayer.
.......Week
1: Prayer Basics
.......Week
2: Ingredients for Powerful
......................Prayer
.......Week
3: Praying Like Jesus
Then the 3
weeks before Easter, we're going to look at the story of Habakkuk.
If you read the book of Habakkuk, it reads like a giant prayer: a
conversation between Habakkuk and God. From Habakkuk's story,
we'll not only pull away a few principles that will deepen our
prayer lives, but we'll also come away with some ideas that will
help us tackle the difficult and painful circumstances of life with
an attitude
of prayer.
So, the next
3 weeks will look like this:
.......Week
4: Honesty: The Best Policy
.......Week
5: Prayer: When Life is
......................Tough
.......Week
6: Prayer: While You Wait
Over the
course of this week, spend some time preparing your heart and come
with an open mind, an open heart and prepared to engage some
challenging material!
Blessings!

WEDNESDAYS
(7:30pm - 9:00pm): DEVOTED
- Come to the Ivory Room and join us as we
dive
into a book (and DVD) by John Eldredge
called "Walking With God."
It's a book that addresses the topic of
prayer and teaches us how to have a more effective and deep prayer life.
Eldredge opens up his personal journals and shows his readers what it looks
like for him to walk with God throughout the course of a year. From those
journal entries he draws out principles that can help us in our own walk
with Him. The main point of the book is that prayer isn't something whereby
we go to God and dump all of our baggage before His throne.
Rather, it's an opportunity for us to
engage and communicate with the Creator of the Universe.

these ancient biblical characters are relevant to modern concerns among
people such as doubt, rejection, insignificance, purpose, humility,
suffering, risk, and consequences.

Classes meet each Sunday morning, September through
